Compost - what lessons for each human if each of us were somehow required to create a cubic yard of decent soil in our lifetime.
Plant trees and gardens. Buy more organic and LOCAL
Bring your own shopping bags and refuse plastic ones.
Only watch TV when there’s something you really want to see.
Speak up for what you want [not done much here, people don’t want to stand out]
and the list goes on when we start thinking in these practical terms.

The Social Justice Committee at the Berkeley Fellowship of Unitarian Universalists in Berkeley, California sponsored the WORLD AS CAFÉ.
Fifteen people plus 2 facilitators divided into 2 small groups. We used the Conversation Café format and closed with a large group capture of ideas that came from each of the small groups. Our questions were: “What can we do to leverage ourselves and our communities to create a more just and sustainable world by 2025?” and “What will help you be a person who can create a just and sustainable world by 2025?”
The theme of community emerged several times. Here is a compilation of ideas that surfaced:
• Book club to help us learn more and create an action plan
• “Trim tabs” that are the smallest point that can move something big—what are the trim tabs to create a just and sustainable world?
• Teach sustainability and power issues in schools
• Be inspired by grasshopper quesadillas when we run out of food (from Albert Bates’ “Post Petroleum Survival Guide and Cookbook”
• Community is a tool in sustainability—mutual support, economies of scale
• Have like-minded people to talk to and have influence with
• Morality and social justice in beloved, sacred community
• Techno-minitiarization
• Training/education programs about climate change
• Fun transportation that is efficient and cheap
• Vacuum capsule pipelines
• Live, eat, work closer to home
• Mega cities (inspired by Paulo Soleri)
